Thomas schlug Netflix drei Ideen vor, eine davon war eine Anime-Serie, die auf der Geschichte von Yasuke basiert, der als der erste im Ausland geborene Krieger afrikanischer Abstammung in der japanischen Samurai-Geschichte gilt. Laut Thomas wurde er dazu inspiriert, mehr \u00c3\u00bcber Yasuke zu erfahren, nachdem er online Bilder aus dem Kinderbuch Kuro-suke von Kurusu Yoshio gesehen hatte. Thomas schlug die Serie schlie\u00c3\u0178lich einige Jahre sp\u00c3\u00a4ter vor. Erstmals im November 2018 angek\u00c3\u00bcndigt, wurde Yasuke in Japan vom Studio MAPPA entwickelt, wobei Thomas, der Schauspieler LaKeith Stanfield und der Musikk\u00c3\u00bcnstler Steven Ellison alias Flying Lotus als ausf\u00c3\u00bchrende Produzenten des Projekts fungierten.
