Alle drei haben schwere Vergangenheiten, die sie in der neuen Heimat hinter sich lassen wollen. Hilary und Magaret sind verheiratet und vor den mit Trag\u00c3\u00b6dien und Zorn \u00c3\u00bcberschatteten Familienleben geflohen. Mercy, die j\u00c3\u00bcngste im Bunde, kommt gerade frisch vom College und versucht nach einem traumatischen Erlebnis in ihrer Heimat Korea einen Neuanfang in Hongkong wagen. Die drei Frauen werden durch einen tragischen Unfall zusammengef\u00c3\u00bchrt und versuchen sich nun gegenseitig Halt und Hoffnung zu geben. Mercy schlittert wieder in ein Trauma, Margaret und Hilary k\u00c3\u00a4mpfen tagt\u00c3\u00a4glich mit ihrer Vergangenheit aus einer br\u00c3\u00bcchigen Ehe und einer Trag\u00c3\u00b6die in der Familie. Als Ehem\u00c3\u00a4nner der beiden sind Jack Huston und Brian Tee zu sehen. Die Serie Expats zeigt das Leben in Hongkong, die Schwierigkeiten von Zugewanderten und die ganz normalen Sorgen des Alltags, In Flashbacks lernen die Zuschauenden die Frauen und ihre Geschichten aus der Vergangenheit noch besser kennen. Expats erz\u00c3\u00a4hlt spannend und sehr pers\u00c3\u00b6nlich die Herausforderungen, die kleinen Erfolge und die gro\u00c3\u0178en Wirrnisse der Frauen in einer fremden Stadt. Lulu Wang, bekannt durch The Farewell, inszenierte die Serie Expats, die auf dem Roman von Janice Y.K. Lee \u00e2\u20ac\u017eThe Expatriates\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 beruht, in dem die Autorin ihre eigenen Erfahrungen einflie\u00c3\u0178en l\u00c3\u00a4sst und verarbeitet. Expats wurde w\u00c3\u00a4hrend der Corona-Zeit in Hongkong gedreht, was damals auch zu Diskussionen f\u00c3\u00bchrte, wie Kidman und die Crew die strikten Regelungen und Verbote im chinesischen Ausland umgehen konnten. Auch soll es immer wieder zu Streit zwischen Kidman und der Regisseurin gekommen sein. Damit ist wohl die Produktion ebenso spannend und konfliktreich gewesen wie die Serie selbst.
