Couples always aspire to become responsible and good parents. They dream of building a contented livelihood for their children, providing good education, elegant attire, nutritious food, and shelter above their heads at night. However, this dream can go awry when a government controls your livelihood due to overpopulation and limited resources, thus implements stricter rules in terms of having a baby, and finally, confining your happiness. Focusing on parenthood as the core theme, director Fleur Fortuné brought it to life by creating the film The Assessment, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Mia, Alicia Vikander as Virginia, and Himesh Patel as Aaryan.

Technology-Driven Life

Mia and Aaryan reside in a technologically advanced home beneath a secure dome. Though their professions may differ, Mia, working as a Botanist and Aaryan working as a virtual pet creator, their dreams remain united–having a baby.

The Assessment

Mia and Aaryan deliberately need a child and are looking forward to entering parenthood. However, they have to undergo a seven-day assessment program, where they have to excel themself, failing may culminate in losing their right to parenthood. To conduct their program, a government appointee, Virginia, arrives to test them. As the couple initially struggles to contemplate the fact, but are bound to endure the circumstances. As the days pass, test levels keep on increasing, checking the couple’s preservation; moreover, based on Virginia’s decision, Mia and Aaryan will succeed in the test.

Hidden Truth

The couple tries to act as normal parents with Virginia, but her manipulation and odd behaviour lead to an entangled situation, thus failing the couple. Devastated by this incident, Mia embarks on a mission to uncover the hidden truths behind this act. Her confrontation with Virginia unveils a shocking truth that startles Mia.

Fake Baby

However, Virginia’s decision to end her life comes with her own consequences. Mia and Aaryan are still processing the incident that happened before their eye. Unbearable to live in a strict society, Mia walks out on Aaryan, thereby leaving him alone. To fill the void, Aaryna creates a fake baby and Mia as their remembrance.

Every scene holds the audience’s attention from start to finish. All the actors have delivered top-notch performances. The plotline, background score, and locations add a rich texture to the scene. The Assessment was released on March 21, 2025, and upon its release, it garnered accolades for compelling story, direction, and writing. The film’s underlying themes, like extinct animals, parenthood, confined society, and relationships, highlight the struggle between human desire for connection and the harsh realities of a controlled, fragile world.
