Tom chases Jerry, and the Cops chase the culprit. To maintain law and order under control in a society, the police’s undivided attention is essential. For cops to perform their duties seamlessly, even the government’s support is needed. Underlying this theme, the showrunners Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan created the S.W.A.T. series. This action-drama drew inspiration from the 70s TV series of the same name.

This series’s success inspired many other filmmakers and creators to develop a refined plotline further down the road. For example, the S.W.A.T. film was released in 2003, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, and Michelle Rodriguez. However, to bring a new narrative and unique, thought-provoking ideas to audiences, Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan modified the story with additional elements to enhance the series’ plot and released it in 2017.

Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr

The entire series revolves around Hondo, an ex-marine, presently serving as a sergeant in the LAPD. The twist arises when Hondo is chosen to lead the S.W.A.T. team (Special Weapons and Tactics), often referred to as the “last stop.” This team is responsible for resolving dangerous situations in Los Angeles. However, Hondo must balance his professional duties by remaining loyal to his brothers in blue and the community he serves.

Real Cops

Hondo and his team undertake dangerous operations despite the odds every day. Their bold attitude and unity help them to achieve success. One of the series’ highlighting factors is the inclusion of real cops’ life stories–how they dealt with the problems, what challenges they faced during their service; all this provided an authenticity to the series.

On Field

Hondo is bound to obey the rules and regulations, and so is his team. But, as the story proceeds, Hondo entangles himself in a complicated situation–racial tensions, high-stakes missions where he must bridge the gap between his professional and personal career for law enforcement.

Ensemble cast

Throughout the series, few actors arrival and departure may elevate the plot.  However, the lead actors—Shemar Moore as Hondo, Stephanie Sigman as Captain Jessica, Jay Harrington as David “Deacon” Kay, and Alex Russell as Officer III James “Jim” Street—bring the characters to life and captivate the audience.

After the release of S.W.A.T., it was appreciated for its originality and attention to detail. The subtle and sublime background score complements the scene on the screen. Its portrayal of a raw storyline adds a new dimension to the plot when compared to other action-drama series. S.W.A.T.’s eighth season may have ended on CBS on 16 May 2025, but its success has paved the way for a spin-off, S.W.A.T. Exiles, where Moore reprises the role of Hondo. Though few commentators have expressed their concerns about the spin-off, Moore assured the audience that the spin-off will take place to entertain the audience, and said to be optimistic about the future while cherishing the wonderful memories of the S.W.A.T series.
