After Kunchako Boban’s Officer & Mohan Lal’s Empuraan, we have another Malayalam superstar film in line. Yes! Senior actor Dileep is back with a heartwarming family drama film, “Prince and Family”. On May 9, it was released in theaters and received immense love from the audience. Now, gearing up for a nationwide OTT premiere this weekend. Read this article till the end for all exclusive details.

Who is Prince?

In the titular role, Dileep aka Prince Chakkalakkal is the bachelor of the three brothers and owner of the city’s most popular bridal boutique. Despite getting good matches for marriage, his ideal expectations and obligations from his future wife keep him single till this age. As both his brothers settle down in prosperous wedlocks, he too switches off his monogamy and enters an arranged marriage with Chinju Rani, a social-media star.

Actually, the couple are opposite poles with heavily contrasting personalities. With time, their struggles lead to humorous chaos and unfold the reality of internet influence in the relationships and even disrupt the basic family duties. So, what’s the climax? It’s coming OTT on June 20 this week. Scroll down to know where it’s releasing.

Viral Vibes

If you’ve seen the trending Instagram shorts of a bridal entry into the reception hall with an energetic dance performance to the viral song “Malayoor”, it’s from this film, Prince and Family. It got wide recognition because of this interesting yet funny video. Well, the film has more to add for entertainment. At one point, it’s portrayed like a common trope of a “Good Husband” married to a “Bad Wife”.

However, their whole family tries to involve themselves and adjust to the social-media norms because their daughter-in-law is a viral star. Even the husband transforms into a sensation, he couldn’t rub off the unsettling feeling of his wife living in that fame bubble rather than a proper wife. The debut director, Binto Stephen, can do better as they left many parts unexplored and went with a stereotypical climax and societal commentary.

Crafting Characters

Classic Dileep character as an old-school husband and fashion designer, while his wife Chinju Rani, aka Raniya Raanaa, excels in her role as a bubbly, boundaryless influencer bride. The other cast are mostly family members, like Jince and Shince are supporting roles by Dhyan Sreenivasan and Josekutyy Jacob, pretty decent characters. While baby and Jancy, the parents of the family, balance the laughter to a needful morale.

Prince and Family certainly has an ensemble local caste that many might not recognize. However, the director managed to capture the essence of rural Kerala and mindsets with all the main actors set in warm sensibilities anda  little inconsistent framing.

Box Office Collection and Reviews

After a long streak of average films, Prince and Family is Dileep’s highest-grossing movie after his strong comeback in 2017’s Ramaleela. It managed to earn a gross of USD 26 crores, being ranked as the 6th highest box office collection Malayalam film of 2025. These numbers are good compared to the recent failure of Prithviraj’s L2: Empuraan.

Music and Sound Design

The songs are limited and good. Prince and Family has overall four songs, in which two are titular songs, i.e.,“The Song of Prince” and “The Life of Prince‘, one comes at early film minutes, and another at the later emotional part. While the other two are visual treats, Dhyan Sreenivasan shines in the “Moonnilu Moothon Prince,” and Udit Narayan’s “Rani Meri Rani” is a very refreshing, offbeat lovers/family song.

Final Verdict

Prince and Family is a clean humour family entertainer with a strong first half, which later falls apart with a typical climax. However, the debut director’s attempt to uncover a true issue of today’s privacy and influence stays strong. Situational comedy lights the positive part of the movie, and it’s releasing on June 20 on the Zee 5 platform. So watch together with your family and spend quality time this weekend.
