Now, imagine films set against the backdrop of beautiful places that are aesthetically appealing–settings that enhance the story and captivate the audience. One such film shot amid the backdrop of the Manaro region is My Brilliant Career in 1979. Starring Judy Davis as Sybylla Melvyn, who aspires to become famous–an actor or writer, but her encounter with two handsome men changes the path, thus creating a twist in her ambitious career.
The Author
Miles Franklin, in 1901, wrote a novel uncovering the lifestyle of women in 1897 and the societal pressure on them about marriage and raising children. Her novel’s main leading character, Sybylla, is a free-spirited young woman whose dreams lie beneath her smile. Her lifestyle upsets her parents and makes them take an appropriate decision–sending Sybylla to her well-settled grandmother. Upon arrival, Sybylla meets two handsome men, Frank Hawdon and Harry Beecham. While navigating her love life with Harry, Sybylla struggles to earn a decent income to lead a life. However, to achieve something big in her life, Sybylla writes a novel titled My Brilliant Career and sends the manuscript to a publishing house, eagerly awaiting the outcome.
The Film
Director Gillian Armstrong helmed the film My Brilliant Career in 1979. Upon its release, the film received appreciation for its original adaptation, background score, actors’ performances, writing, and direction. Its triumph led to an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design, while Judy Davis won a BAFTA award for her performance in the Best Actress category. In 1979, this film opened many doors and evoked a new sense of female empowerment and artistic independence. Not only the film, but this novel was made into a Broadway-style show by Melbourne Theatre Company in 2024.

Netflix Adaptation
Inspired by the novel and the classic old film, the creator, Liz Doran, has converged all the new starcast under one roof. In the lead role, Philippa Northeast plays the character of Sybylla, Anna Chancellor plays Sybylla’s grandmother, and Christopher Chung plays young Harry, the one whom Sybylla befriends.
