But ever wondered about the quirky songs that hide deep down in our minds? Yes, today let’s delve into those songs that entertained us during our prime time and still continue to hook us with their timeless charm, unforgettable melodies, and emotional depth.
Crazy Frog
Who knew this animated character would win millions of hearts across the world? This idea was initially created by Daniel Malmedahl in 1997. He recorded a funny motorbike (two-stroke engine) sound of himself and uploaded it online. Later in 2003, Erik Wernquist, a Swedish performer and scriptwriter, found the video and developed it into a funny 3D animated character, The Annoying Thing and released it online.
However, in the later years, Daniel found out about the success of the character and contacted Erik, requesting that his name be included since he was the original creator of the sound. Finally, in 2004, the Crazy Frog was released by two companies, Ringtone Europe and Jamster België, after acquiring legal ownership of the character and song. Upon its release, it drew recognition and broke all the records.
Barbie Girl
In Denmark, inspired by Barbie dolls, creators Søren Rasted, Claus Norreen, René Dif, and Lene Nystrøm, wrote the song of “Barbie Girl”, starring Lene Nystrøm as Barbie and René Dif as Ken. The song narrates the story of Barbie’s lifestyle while interacting with Ken, her boyfriend. Barbie, bound to live in a plastic world, is fond of fashion and the possession of luxurious items.
Meanwhile, in a stereotypical fantasy world, Ken supports her thoughts. Released by the Danish-Norwegian group Aqua in 1997, this song earned a top spot on the charts and seventh place on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its triumph also led to the development of the movie, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken in 2023.
Dame Tu Cosita
This song immediately reminds us of a green alien singing and dancing throughout the video. Helmed by El Chombo, a Panamanian artist, and voiced by Cutty Ranks, the song gained huge recognition upon its release in 2018. It became a party and a celebratory song. Although it was initially recorded in 1997, its extended version was released in 2018. Till today, this song holds 5 billion views, and competes with the crazy frog song on YouTube.
Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex
After its release in 1994, this song from the Swedish group Rednex achieved its greatest height on the US Billboard Hot 100 and earned global recognition. In this song, there is a perfect fusion of American instruments like the banjo and fiddle, with the band’s Eurodance music to give listeners an authentic folk vibe. Sung by Annika Ljungberg, the song still retains its energy today.
Who Let the Dogs Out: Cover Version
In 1998, Anslem Douglas released the song Who Let the Dogs Out. But in the later years, the Baha Men band used this as a cover song and released it in 2000, and its triumph elevated after its featuring in Rugrats in Paris: The Movie. The Baha Men’s version of the song reached the Top 40 on the US charts and won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2001.
