New Zealand artist Lorde left the music industry in silence for the past four years. As of June 27, 2025, she was able to launch her long-awaited fourth studio album, “Virgin,” from which fans can stream on multiple platforms.
Out of eleven songs on the album, three were already released as singles “Man of the Year,” “Hammer,” claiming its opening position, and “What Was That. Furthermore, Hammer’s one-minute earworm “What Was That” is edging out as a pop hit scoring over 80 million Spotify streams and firmly seating itself at number thirty-six on Billboard Hot 100.
Previously known for her collaborations with Jack Antonoff on the Melodrama and Solar Power albums, this time Lorde partnered up with Jim-E Stack providing production and writing work featured in Virgin alongside Dan Nigro, Dev Hynes and Fabiana Palladino. Earlie’s works indicated moving away from Antonoff and exploring new directions in her music to blend worlds apart from sounds which did not exist.
Lorde made sure to make a variety from old slabs
The album reflects a distinct and intimate phase in her life where she recuperated from an eating disorder, processed the end of a long-term relationship, and navigated through her gender identity. She described the album’s sound as visceral and rhythm-driven, capturing themes of death, rebirth, new beginnings, and transitions.
It is noted by critics that American Lorde has blended introspective raw lyrics with distinctively varied sonic and experimental production. The album looks back to some of her older works with bass-heavy sounds while also candidly reflecting on new thematic drugs, sex, personal vulnerability and exploring uncharted territories.
