Director Vetrimaaran officially kicks off his new North Chennai gangster film with Silambarasan TR, putting to rest the swirling gossip that he has sidelined Suriya for the project.
Fans had watched closely as updates on Vetrimaaran’s slate began to pile up, and social media murmured that his long-touted collaboration with Suriya for Vaadivaasal had been dropped in favor of Simbu. The truth, however, is that Vetrimaaran’s calendar has simply opened up room for parallel stories, giving each actor a chance to shine under his signature lens.
The cameras are expected to roll on the new project by late June or early July, and a brief promo clip should drop on June 25. This rapid shift in schedule has nothing to do with any fallout between the team and Suriya; instead, its a smart move to keep the banner busy while Vaadivaasal waits for its moment.
Vada Chennai Universe: Dhanush’s Role and Sequel Status
A lot of the mixed messages started when fans assumed Silambarasan‘s next movie with Vetrimaaran would be Vada Chennai 2, the follow-up to the 2018 hit featuring Dhanush. Vetrimaaran has now cleared the air: the Silambarasan film will share the Vada Chennai backdrop, yet it is not a direct sequel. Dhanush still holds all rights to the Vada Chennai saga, including any follow-ups or spin-offs, and he has kindly issued a No Objection Certificate for the new venture without asking for any money up front.
STR 49 is set in the world of Vada Chennai, but its not Vada Chennai 2. I told Dhanush about this film with Simbu, and he said it would be a new experience for me.
“I spoke to Simbu, and he told me straight: only do the film if it feels right for you. He even said he’s fine with us making his story as a separate movie. He doesn’t want anything to come between me and Dhanush, so they both give me the freedom to choose and be myself,” director Vetrimaaran explained.
Vada Chennai 2 Officially Set for 2026
Vetrimaaran and Dhanush have now made it clear that shooting for Vada Chennai 2 will kick off in 2026, right after the director wraps his commitments to producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu. Fans can look forward to the same crew coming back, and although whispers about cameos from Simbu and others will not die down, the heart of the story will still rest with Dhanush.
Industry Reactions and the Road Ahead
The fresh timeline has sparked plenty of buzz, along with a little debate over who owns what and how Dhanush fits in the picture. Vetrimaaran has stepped in to squash claims of a falling-out, stressing that everyone involved actually respects one another and backs each other’s projects.

Key Takeaways
Vetrimaaran’s upcoming film stars Silambarasan, not Suriya, because of busy schedules and production calendars, not because of any personal clash.
Vaadivaasal with Suriya is still on track for a late 2025 start. Simbu’s film takes place in the Vada Chennai universe but is not Vada Chennai 2.
Vada Chennai 2 with Dhanush is set to start shooting in 2026.
Reports assure fans there is no fallout between Vetrimaaran, Dhanush, or Suriya; everyone continues cheering for each other’s films.
Such careful project timing shows how flexible the Tamil film business can be, balancing artistic goals with real-world schedules. In the meantime, Silambarasan will kick off a fresh North Chennai tale later this year, and Vaadivaasal, along with Vada Chennai 2, still sit solidly on the future agenda.
