Obstetrician life is not simple; it involves perseverance and determination. Based on nuances, director Déa Kulumbegashvili created “April” in 2024, featuring Ia Sukhitashvili, Kakha Kintsurashvili and Merab Ninidze in the lead roles.

Aside from this, Déa’s other films include “Beginning” in 2020, which created a milestone in directing the “April” film. Her notable contribution remains uncompromising and emotionally charged, which paves the way for further establishing her as a promising talent in modern-day cinema.

Unflinching exploration

The film delves into the difficulties of reproductive justice in rural Georgia. The story focuses on Nina (Ia Sukhitashvili), an obstetrician in a hospital in a rural part of Georgia, performing illegal abortions for women in need. The film unfolds every layer of stillbirth, influencing a melancholy tone throughout the narration. Nina’s professional skill is subdued by social prejudice, as she faces accusations of misconduct after the death of a newborn.

She gets investigated on this matter, which further intensifies the story. Nina entangles herself between covert procedures, which lead to conflict with the conservative norms of her community, and benevolent actions for the sake of women.

Narration

Kulumbegashvili follows a minimalist storytelling approach, characterized by extended still shots and minimal conversation, emphasising the gravity of the narrative to unfold through visual and acoustic cues. Cinematographer Arseni Khachaturan’s work is phenomenal, capturing the essence of the rural landscape and the isolation of Nina’s existence. The film’s pacing and background score are thoughtful, enticing viewers into its universe.

A Perfect Synchronisation

All the scenes in the film deserve applause, especially Nina performing an abortion on a girl. The scene is portrayed with affective intimacy, emphasising the physical emotions—the sound of a plastic sheet and the mother’s caressing touch—elevating the weight of the act without graphics. This approach reinforces the film’s effectiveness in portraying the emotional and physical aspects of the issue. This character-driven film holds a deep and special connection with the audience.

Insightful

April is informative rather than a movie. It subtly showcases the ethical principles surrounding abortion and illuminates women’s choices concerning their reproductive health. Nina’s journey serves as an example for all unheard and unspoken women. Kulumbegashvili’s work evokes empathy for the challenges women face. The film’s realistic visual elements and compelling storyline make it a must-watch.
