The Life List, helmed by Adam Brooks, is an earnest and quietly intriguing romantic comedy drama derived from Lori Nelson Spielman’s bestselling novel. The film focuses on Alex, played by Sofia Carson, a young woman whose life is shattered by the death of her cherished mother, Elizabeth, played by Connie Britton. Now, Alex must complete a life list of dreams to inherit the family business. However, this list was made by her at the age of 13, but now her mother sets a condition through a video and explains that her inheritance will be unlocked after completion of the list, one by one.

Self-Discovery

This concept, which might feel excessively sentimental, is navigated with surprising restraint.  Elizabeth wisely converges on raw emotion over melodrama, allowing Alex’s journey to unfold with patience and balance. Each item on the list includes

  • Alex must fully open her heart to her partner
  • Explore as a teacher
  • Learn to play “Clair de Lune” on piano
  • Shooting hoops
  • Assemble friends for a full moon campout
  • Reunite with brothers

Journey

Alex’s journey in completing the list is captured exceptionally; throughout the film, she encounters new friends and relatives who create an impact on her perception of life. The journey catalyses Alex’s self-discovery and healing, bringing her one step closer to inheriting the family business.

Ticking List

The life list delivers a performance that is both vulnerable and quietly empowering. Her transformation feels earned, as does her chemistry with the various people she meets along the way, especially Garrett, played by Sebastian de Souza, who brings lightness and grounding to the film’s more reflective moments. However, their relationship goes awry due to Brad, played by Kyle Allen, a lawyer.

Visually Appealing

The Life List embraces a warm and gentle aesthetic that enhances the story. The entire film’s strength lies in its storytelling and character development. The pacing and background score deserve special appreciation.

Unique Thought

The Life list sheds light on childhood’s hidden dreams and thoughts, because as people grow older, they forget the genuineness and happiness in little elements. Life list balances all the emotions equally without overdramatising.

In this fast-moving world, the life list is a sweet and gentle reminder to pause, look back, and discover the dreams that influenced us deeply. This film leaves a lasting impression on the viewer’s mind.
