How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is the talk of the town, and for a valid reason. It’s streaming now on Netflix, it’s been trending for 5 weeks straight, claiming the title of Thailand’s highest-grossing film (2024). In case you missed it, here’s why this gem has stolen hearts globally and, yep, it’s way more than just a feel-good tale about family. The film is in Thai, and yes, that comforting, soothing voice of grandma? Absolutely real. And don’t worry, there are subtitles.

Story

This is essentially about a selfish grandson who makes a show of moving in with his dying grandmother (who has cancer), not out of any real affection for her, but to secure an inheritance. But as the title suggests, it isn’t so much about money in the end. Instead, the movie slowly goes into their relationship, now filled with those cute accidental moments that everybody possibly has or may potentially have – happy tears and what you would do for the people you love.

Spoiler alert:

The part where Grandma shaves her head for chemotherapy? Oh no… I cried a bucket. I know you’ll too. Like hug your pillow and sniff your blanket, level sobbed.

What’s Good?

1. The Warmth of Grandma

Awww, Grandma is like that perfect winter hug. Her wisdom, her love, her care – she’s the kind of character you wish you had somebody like her by your side. Her voice… It’s just so soothing, like a lullaby you never knew you needed.

2. Visuals & Authenticity

Cinematography? Wow. Asia’s color grading leaves Hollywood in the dust. It will always outshine Hollywood in acting and visuals. There is that softness in the scenes, making every moment live and intimate, big bright light or silly, dramatic angles, just their pure, authentic visual reality.

3. Acting that Looks Real

No drama, and nothing feels forced. It feels very natural, and you can almost relate to the event from your home. You know, that friendly everyday struggle to make ends meet, with all the big moments coming out of simple conversation or sharing a meal.

4. The Grandson’s Support

M (Grandson), He is not just another character, though; he is the added charm in the film. Highly developed and always beside Grandma, he’s a good character, growing through the course of the movie from selfishness to true caring. Feels so real and relatable.

5. Emotional Impact

This movie can make even the mountains cry. Expect and prepare yourself for lots of tears. M being there for Grandma when chemo takes away all her hair… Geez. That just opens every floodgate! The melancholic vibe in these scenes hits you once, like an old memory coming rushing by out of nowhere, the memory you never even knew existed beneath the distance.

Absolutely Yes. Yes! Yes! If you lean towards these types of stories, the ones that touch your heart and make you feel like sitting right next to your grandma, this movie has to be on your list. It is not a thriller or slow burn (needless) but a quiet kind of movie that creeps up on you and wraps itself around you, warm and real.

Final Thoughts -Click or Skip?

Click, obviously. Don’t think twice. This isn’t just a movie – it’s like a warm bowl of soup when you’ve been out in the cold too long.  You may not realize how much you needed it, but once you’ve had a taste, you’ll be grateful.
