Top 5 German Series of All Time You Need to Watch Right Now

At least some countries still produce high-quality films, and Germany is one of them. Based on a series of novels and real locations. The best German comedy, crime, Drama and many more shows on Netflix, the production designers and casting people involved have studied the paintings and drawings.

1. Babylon Berlin [2017] (Thriller)

The Storyline

It shows clearly how Germany changed from being a troubled democracy after World War I, although one with promise, to the Nazi dictatorship it became with Hitler’s election despite Hitler’s direct absence from the show itself. 

The Best Part

The cabaret scenes are fraught with the frenzied energy that was building in Germany during the Weimar Republic. The series takes us from the opulence of the very few to the nearly inhuman living conditions of the many, the starving poor.

The Characters

Great performances by some outstanding European talents, and even has a great cameo by Bryan Ferry.

2. Deutschland 83 [2015] (Thriller)

The Storyline

It starts with the current parlous state of geopolitics, and worryingly, history repeating itself through bad or frankly crazy leadership around the world. This series shows the failings of all ideologies so far.

The Best Part

There was no slacking in great storylines, with a relentless trajectory, pace, tension and suspense. It lent authenticity with seamless mixing of real news footage and attention to historical detail. To balance the darker elements, bits of humour were woven in.

The Characters

Lenora Rauch: Martin’s aunt, Tobias Tischbier: An HVA field operative, General Edel: A high-ranking West German general, played a great part.

The Storyline

This Series, How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast), features a teenager who will make you laugh at times. You will get to know something about the dark side of technology and the internet, and what he does. The show will keep you engrossed and which makes it even special.

The Best Part

This is one of the best shows on Netflix if you are bored and need the motivation to spark up your mind. Of course, do not sell drugs, but this show has so many details that make you think like an entrepreneur.

The Characters

Mr Zimmerman was great, so were Mr. Lenny and his friends Kira, Dan and Lisa.

4. Dogs of Berlin [2018] (Drama) 

The Storyline

The murder of a football star in a multi-ethnic community is going to be interesting. The show focuses on the percolating social tension between German ultra-rightists and Turkish immigrants.

The Best Part

Dogs of Berlin is shot in very dark and drab places in the seedy, shady world of the story, not the first Netflix series to do this in a European country. Germany is also a country that likes to forget it’s past, the use of the swastika is banned in Germany so having a nazi group.

The Characters

Felix Kramer as seriously dodgy but dedicated cop Kurt Grimmer playing alongside Fahri Yardim’s, Birkan – who have to go up against totally psycho gang lord Hakim Tariq-Amir (Sinan Farhangmehr), a nasty nest of Neo-Nazis and the ‘Yugoslavian’ mafia.

5. 4 Blocks [2017] (Drama)

The Storyline

The show follows an Arab crime family in Berlin, and the characters often mention that when they came to Germany originally, the kids were not allowed to go to school, and the rest of the family was not allowed to work. 

The Best Part

There is this neo-noir coldness to the series, which is how violence and crime feel in real life. Initially, the characters seem too cold, and we don’t relate much. But with time, we start connecting.

The Characters 

Kida Khodr Ramadan’s portrayal of Ali “Toni” Hamady, the clan head who seeks a more respectable life while being forced into drug trafficking.
