This is one of those films that comes around every so often but leaves you utterly breathless with your jaw hanging on the floor the whole way through. It’s that dazzling and grand. We are witnessing cinematic history once again in the realm of sci-fi spectacle. A spectacular companion piece to the first film that tremendously enhances that. Whilst still being entirely spectacular, fresh, & darker in tone. This movie is inevitable.
The Story
As with all Novel to Film adaptations, there have been changes & omissions compared to the source material. With that in mind, and even with The Dune Chronicles being the greatest book series of all time, it took the entire drive home from the theater before my mind even fully processed the changes & omissions (some major) to certain subplots in the story, with how well the film works overall. Most of the changes made were understandable, and some of them I even thought worked out better than was originally written. Which is saying a lot.
The film journeys deeper into the sketches of Arrakis, made all the more real thanks to the beautiful set location of Wadi Rum, Jordan. The Fremen faith practice is highly reflective of the real-life religion of Islam, mixed with elements from other religions to give it a powerful impact.
Performance
Timothée Chalamet delivers a transformative performance. His portrayal of Paul evolves from an uncertain boy into a fierce, almost unsettlingly charismatic leader. Zendaya finally gets real screen time, portraying Chani not just as a love interest but as a strong, skeptical voice amid Paul’s mythic destiny. Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha is a standout. He brings a chilling, almost predatory energy that contrasts beautifully with Chalamet’s restrained intensity. Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken add gravitas to the political side of the story as Princess Irulan and Emperor Shaddam.
Is Dune: Part Two better than the first? Dune as a whole has made the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Abominations look like a sick joke perpetrated against the unfortunate audience watching in horror at the complete & utter destruction of their childhood. Where Part 2 shines over Part 1 is that while Part 1 did a great job transferring this world from words to visuals and establishing the universe and characters, Part 2 fully immerses you in the story and takes you behind the veil.
Part 1 gets you acquainted and familiar with the surroundings, characters, and scheming plotlines, but Part 2 delivers in making you feel the emotional weight behind its story and how the plots and motivations unravel before you.
