Malayalam films hit different, especially in the genre of “Pure Love”. Global viewers have celebrated with Bangalore Days, Om Shanthi Oshana, Hridayam, & Premam so evidently. One such happy, fresh, and record-breaking rom-com, which achieved remarkable box office success last year, Mamitha Baiju’s Premalu, is coming again. Let’s see more details.
Prequel Plotline
Sachin Santhosh is an ordinary, go-lucky guy who aims to pursue higher education in the UK. However, his first visa attempt was rejected due to funding shortages, leaving a six-month cooling-off period. Desperate to escape his home, he moves to Hyderabad with his childhood friend, Amal Davis. On the other hand, we have Reenu Roy, a young, talented IT employee in the Ospyn company, living with her colleague Karthika.
Despite meeting at odds in a close wedding, Sachin and Reenu strike a quick friendship on their drive back to the city. He falls in love at first sight with her and decides to woo her, but Reenu is looking for an accomplished career man, to whom her colleague Aadi is silently pining. Their love triangle takes twists over time, but leads to a happy ending.
Vibe: More than just a Feel-Good film
Premalu is more than just a rom-com. While it doesn’t have super special scenes to churn, its simplicity is what works for the audience. It’s quite a light-hearted story that explores the concepts of tender love, friendships, values, and feelings. As for the sequel director is to keep the same charming tempo with enhanced plotlines & character arcs.
The prequel is left off, Reenu proposing to Sachin right before his flight to London, and they promise to have a successful long-distance relationship. Inadvertently, it’s the start to a whole new world of maturity, trust, longing, & perseverance. Premalu’s sequel will delve deeper into their attempts, compromises, and how they will protect their love.
Cast and Crew
The main leads, Naslen K. Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju, are well-known actors trending in the Mollywood industry. Both have started careers in supporting roles. Nasleen worked in notable films like Home, Super Saranya, Neymar, etc, before becoming a commercial hero. Mamita Baiju became instantly popular for her roles in Pranya Vilasam, Operation Java, and Kho Kho. As for the supporting cast, most of the original characters of Amal, Karthika, Thomas, and Aadhi are returning. We don’t have an update on new entries.
Production and Awards
The film’s digital streaming rights were bought by JioHotstar. As for the Telugu version, it’s specially handled by S.S. Rajamouli garu’s son, S.S. Karthikeya. They gave intense consideration to dubbing & VFX editing before releasing it to theatres and OTT platform Aha. Well, the film is also widely recognized in awards, and Mamitha got the best actress award at the JFW 2025 function, and the Best Editor award to Sangeeth Prathap.

When is the Release?
As for the sequel, on April 19th, 2024, the makers announced the commencement of part II. It’s shooting allegedly starting in June of this year and is scheduled to release on the upcoming Christmas. Premalu, directed by Girish A.D, is a blockbuster and collected Rs. 62.75 crore alone from the home state, joining the highest-grossing Malayalam films.
It has the potential to achieve more numbers in the sequel as well, so wait and see if the hype is an advantage or just another missed opportunity.
