Does this popular ringtone, “Teri Maa ka Phone, Meri Maa ka Phone, Sabki Maa ka,” sound familiar? Ok! Here’s another clue: this chartbuster comes from an underrated feel-good romcom featuring a star-studded cast with Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Khan, and Kirron Kher. Yes! It’s our own desi princess story produced by the one and only Walt Disney Pictures. It’s Khoobsurat!
What’s the story?
Mrilani Chakravarthy is a talented physiotherapist from Kolkata who’s called to Rajasthan for the king’s treatment at the Royal Palace. She is decidedly odd to the Queen, and her behavior from day one is unconventional. However, others, from Princess Divya to royal servants, all warm up to her playful nature. Even our prince, despite being engaged to another, is instantly attracted to Millie’s unique style and good heart.
At one point, he saves her from kidnapping, and they both accidentally kiss, realizing their feelings for each other. The affection progresses to love, but can a doctor ever measure up to marrying a prince? Likewise, our prince has a full set of obligations that might prevent it. So, do they have a happy ending? To know more, stream the movie on Netflix right away!
Is it the same old stereotypical princess plotline?
Apparently, NO! Indifferent to what we’ve seen in classic Disney clichés, our heroine, Sonam Kapoor, aka Millie Chakravarty, is not a princess. She is a happy-go-lucky physiotherapist who comes to the royal palace of Rajasthan to treat the King. Guess what? Our hopeless romantic heroine falls for the handsome Rajput prince, Vikram Singh Rathore.
Also, another plus point in this movie is the strong mother-daughter relationship. Her mother, Kirron Kher, listens to every one of her rants and suggests solutions in her quirky Punjabi style. On the other hand, we have Ratna Pathak Shah, who delivers a killer performance as the Queen Bee, oozing sass throughout. Another underrated plus point is the movie’s Rajasthani backdrop and its mainstream songs. They add that tad bit of sentiment and fun to watch.
So, watch or skip?
The story is quite different from what we see in regular Bollywood. The plot is plausible and incorporates good comedy and drama. Also, it’s Sonam Kapoor who shines with her artsy and maximalist fashion. She is “Khoobsurat” and portrays the role of “Royal Misfit” with ease till the end. I have watched this movie many times, and it never gets boring. So, it’s my strong recommendation to stream it in your free time or with your partner. It is worth it.
