The layers and layers of heartache and seemingly impossible decisions to overcome, it’s not a gritty cop show with lots of drama, just an easy watch. It has a story that ties in from the first to the last episode. A gripping adaptation of the best-selling book by Liz Moore. There’s a whole lot of stereotypical, repetitive crime story plot devices. The show keeps you in suspense. Just when you think you know the story, it adds another layer of complexity. It keeps you on your toes.

The Storyline

Focuses on family and community, flaws and all. Amanda Seyfried plays Mickey, a cop whose family dynamic as a child has clearly affected both her personal and professional life as an adult, and she must walk certain lines as she goes about her investigation. Part of what makes the show interesting is watching her break through the trust issues she developed in life in order to maintain relationships and seek the help she needs to find the serial killer.

The Best Part

It explores police corruption, misogyny, abuse, homelessness, family conflict and violence, and how trauma can disrupt your ability to trust yourself and other good people. This series is about addiction, regrets, heartbreaks, forgiveness, and finding oneself in a corrupt system that has failed so many people and continues to do so to this day. This is probably one of the best TV series we have watched in a very long time. The Long Bright River storyline is captivating, has a strong plot and captures the emotions of the viewer. Fantastic choice of music and great cinematography really highlight the scene and the emotions it carries.

Some Errors Of The Show

All you need is to watch the first and the last episode to get the story. All the episodes in the middle are fillers, so drawn out that you can leave, go to the bathroom, come back, and you wouldn’t need to rewind because you wouldn’t have missed anything, and the writing was sooo bad. Cheesy lines, so slow, so boring. Characters are not fully flushed out, which makes what happens, at times, seem like a leap. On the whole, not a full waste of time. The main character creates much of the mystery by refusing to share critical information with her partner and supervisors.

The Characters

Amanda Seyfried is usually a wonderful Actress. Her character showed her as weak and had no business being a cop. Mickey was the worst and was very poorly cast for the role of a policewoman. The landlady and Truman. The stereotypical boss, the wayward drug addicted sister, as it’s cleansed of reality.

The Conclusion

Characters are not fully flushed out, which makes what happens, at times, seem like a leap.  On the whole, not a full waste of time. Didn’t mind the show, but the worst camera and lighting in any show. This movie was more about a family and their struggles than about the murders. If you just want time to pass, then you can give it a try.
