Farming is one of the most essential sources of our lives. It gives us food and livelihood. Many people choose farming as a passion, while others choose agriculture as their livelihood. Considering farming as the core theme, director Gavin Whitehead crafted an authentic, raw storyline that brings the farm to life. It was called Clarkson’s Farm, focusing on the lifestyle of a person, the Clarkson, and his team in the picturesque location of the Cotswolds, South West England.
Though the series was an unscripted documentary, it sparked important conversations, provided deep insights about farming, built a different perception, and brought attention to overlooked agricultural issues.
Backstory
A journalist–TV Presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, buying 400 hectares of land for farming and renaming it Diddly Squat, paved the way for the development of the show, Clarkson’s Farm. However, in the field, different crops—barley, wheat, and rapeseed—were grown using rotational farming by a farmer until Clarkson bought the land.
New Dimension
The series premiered on 11 June 2021 on Amazon and immediately gained appreciation for its groundbreaking story. It sheds light on Clarkson’s team–Kaleb Cooper, Lisa Hogan, Gerald Cooper, and more trying to solve the issues arising on the field with a unique approach. Especially during the outbreak of cattle illnesses, the suggestions, advice, and timely responses by doctors offer valuable insight from a different perspective.
Appreciating All
To maintain the field on the farm, Clarkson hires people to look after the pigs, sheep, and cows. These people are assigned the responsibilities of shearing and lambing; a beekeeper handles the apiary on the farm. Apart from cattle, Clarkson also focuses on poultry farming with the help of local egg farmers. Additionally, on the farm, grey oyster, speckled chestnut, and lion’s mane mushrooms cultivation with the help of Rafe Williams and Oscar Clutterbuck-Jones, helped Clark explore more into farming. Moreover, for entertainment, a radio and TV presenter, George Lambook, brought a unique blend of humour and lively atmosphere to the farm. For dining, Pip Lacey was hired as a professional chef to offer her services at the farm restaurant.
