1. Top Gun

I feel the need–the need for speed- is the famous dialogue of 1986’s Top Gun movie. Starring an ensemble cast, with Tom Cruise in the lead role, this film definitely created its own fan base among the youth back then–and still does today. Under the direction of Tony Scott, the film mainly focused on the two pilots’ friendship, Maverick, played by Tom Cruise and Goose, played by Kevin Costner. Maverick, a skilled yet stubborn pilot, encounters a devastating accident while piloting his F-14 at aerial training.
During the ejection, Maverick survives, but Goose tragically loses his life–a loss that leaves Maverick devastated. Upon the film’s release in 1986, it received worldwide acclaim for its visual effects, usage of aerial techniques, and soundtrack. This success led to the future development of the film, Top Gun: Maverick, in 2022. Nearly 36 years later, new directors, producers, and Tom Cruise reprising his role as Maverick, came together once again with a new storyline for another instalment; a film that feels like a heartfelt tribute to the original Top Gun.
2. The Aviator

A film that uncovers the lifestyle of a great person, Howard Hughes, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, a movie lover and aviation enthusiast. Hughes’s interest in movies inspired him to direct the film, Hell’s Angels. And his love for aviation drove him to develop an aircraft company–Hughes Aircraft. While navigating both careers, his obsessive–compulsive disorder obstructs his successful life. Throughout the film, Hughes’s life takes many unexpected turns–from the heights of cinematic success to the depths of personal obsession and mental health.
Meanwhile, his relationships with many Hollywood actresses and deteriorating mental health led him to spiral into reclusion and paranoia. However, when the film was released in 2004, it gained appreciation for its adaptation. Director Martin Scorsese skillfully adapted the book into a film by staying true to the original narrative while adding a cinematic touch.
3. Sully: Miracle on the Hudson

Clint Eastwood–Hollywood’s iconic movie star of all time. His contribution to the film industry remains unmatched. Client’s successful films–Every Which Way but Loose, Hang ‘Em High, Where Eagles Dare, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly cemented his reputation as a versatile and bankable star in Hollywood. Apart from acting, Clint Eastwood’s interest in directing films, like Sully: Miracle on the Hudson, which was inspired by a true event in 2009, has also gained significant attention.
It follows Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s decision to safely land on the Hudson River after the loss of both engines due to the bird strike. Clint Eastwood, drawing from the book Highest Duty, written by Sully himself, brought to life the remarkable true story of the emergency Hudson River landing by saving 155 lives, and the challenges that followed. After the film’s release, it gained accolades for its adaptation, Tom Hanks’ performance as Sully, and visually stunning scenes.
4. Flight

The director, Robert Zemeckis, unlayered the themes of redemption, addiction, sacrifice, responsibility, and the consequences of one’s actions in the film Flight. The film revolves around William “Whip” Whitaker Sr, played by Denzel Washington, an alcoholic airline pilot who bravely saves a flight from a disaster by landing on an empty field. However, his actions will lead to further investigations that reveal his struggle with alcohol. Upon its release, the film gained widespread appreciation for Denzel’s performance and direction.

5. 7500

The film unfolds the horrific incident on the flight that is travelling from Berlin to Paris. As it gets hijacked by a group of terrorists, the co-pilot, Tobias, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, dons the sole responsibility of saving the passengers and the crew, all while forming an unexpected connection with one of the hijackers. Upon its release, the film garnered appreciation from the audience and critics for the plot, aerial shots, and storyline.
Though many films explore aviation themes, few manage to capture the true spirit of flight effectively.
