Everyone has special memories of summer: the warm weather, the sun-kissed glow on the face, healthy scrambled eggs with orange juice for breakfast, iced tea in the late evening, and mixed cocktails at night. Importantly, family reunion, which rejuvenates by underscoring the deep bonds of kinship and the comfort of belonging, brings warmth to the heart of summer. We always try to remember these wonderful memories in our hearts, and so does Cadence Sinclair Eastman from We Were Liars. Ironically, Cadence tries hard to remember what happened in the summer of 16. What brought her to this situation?
This psychological thriller series, showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie, drew inspiration from a novel by E. Lockhart with a similar name. Hence, modified the plotlines to appeal to show buffs while retaining the core plot.
Beechwood
Cadence, played by Emily Alyn Lind, finds herself lying on a private island, Beechwood. What brought her to the beach? Who was with her? All the details, Cadence narrates. She had arrived at the beach with her cousins—Johnny, Mirren, and Gat. This place has held a deep connection for them since the early days, as it belonged to Cadence’s grandfather and has been the family’s summer gathering place ever since. Though these four call themselves as liars, there is no main reason for that name.
The Accident
The whole drama—the grandparents and their children, and the aunts fighting over a property—frustrates these four people, taking matters into their own hands to solve the family dispute. But one day, a fire kills all three liars, leaving Cadence alone. Now the question arises, who did that and what happened?
Summer of 17
Now, Cadence’s summer of 17 is spent recollecting all the incidents that led to the fire in the summer of 16. All the memories rushed back in bits and pieces, yet remained ambiguous. Unable to solve the issues, Cadence approaches her cousins for help. This plot twist ignites a flame of curiosity. Cadence envisages conversing with her cousins. Then what had happened to the cousins? Did they really die in the accident? As the story proceeds further, the real reasons are unveiled.

Unstructured
The entire season 1 series follows the unstructured format, once depicting the summer of 16 and other summers of 17. For some viewers, it may feel confusing and unrelated, but the plot twists and additions of characters hold their attention.Â
We Were Liars premiered on June 18, 2025. Upon its release, it received praise for its narration and remaining faithful to the source material. Though it earned recognition, there is no news of season 2 renewal, but the book and the series fans are waiting for it. One of the major spoilers of the series is that Cadence is responsible for the fire. People can watch this series on Amazon.
