Stand-up comedy is a tonic for many people. It’s humour, dialogue, the comedian’s thoughtfulness, and the vibe of laughing and enjoying in a hall, increase the sharpness of mind and reduce the stress level, thus leading one step closer towards a healthy life. Ever wondered when this stand-up comedy originated, and how this influenced new, upcoming comedians to pursue this as their career? If we go back, the stand-up comedy drew inspiration from different shows like minstrel shows and vaudeville in the early 1900s in America.

Though the former one garnered criticism, the latter garnered attention across the globe and adapted various versions along the way to entertain the public. Unlike theatre, Vaudeville has a group of performers entertaining in short acts with their songs, drama, comedy, magic tricks, and acrobatics. As the seasons changed, Vaudeville evolved and took the form of stand-up comedy as we see it now.

Many people don the hat of a comedian, but their timing, personality and extraordinary jokes are what make them unique from others. For example, Zakir Khan in India, Kapil Sharma, and Sumukhi Suresh. Similarly, in the  US, Jerry Seinfeld, Trevor Noah, and others have gained much appreciation from critics and audiences; people repeatedly watch these comedians perform their gigs. One such stand-up comedian, who has earned widespread recognition, especially in the  US,  is Atsuko Okatsuka. Born to a Tawinese and Japanese family, Atsuko moved to the US at an early age. Since 2019, Atsuko has been constantly immersed in stand-up comedy.
