Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, UK. Since young, Jane would write poems involving their mundane activities in different volumes. Later, her passion for literature enabled her to write books that primarily centred on women’s empowerment during that era. Her books gained significant recognition because of the love theme and emotional touch, which readers could resonate with.  Jane’s first book, Sense and Sensibility, was published in the year 1811.

It was well-received and marked the beginning of her literary career, establishing her as a talented novelist with a keen eye for social observation and the complexities of women’s lives. Moreover, this triumph paved the way for further recognition, enabling her to develop her unique narrative voice and explore deeper themes in her subsequent works. Many Hollywood film directors have drawn inspiration from these books and have rendered a cinematic touch to the classic tales, helping to preserve and celebrate Austen’s literary legacy on the big screen. It is a beautiful love story between Elizabeth and Darcy, who come from completely different social backgrounds. Elizabeth, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Bennet, is a quiet and gentle young woman. In contrast, Mr. Darcy comes from a wealthy family and is initially perceived as proud and arrogant. However, the story begins with Mr and Mrs Bennet searching for suitable prospects for their five daughters. The plot intensifies when Elizabeth and Darcy, upon meeting, begin to dislike each other due to first impressions.

Over time, they will overcome the pride and prejudice and set aside their initial misunderstandings, leading to a heartfelt and meaningful union. Director Joe Wright has managed to sustain the original elements of the book–dialogue, similar locations in the film. This highlights the director’s vision to present Jane’s authentic work to the audience. All the actors equally contributed to the film’s success, especially Keira Knightley as Elizabeth, and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr Darcy. Released on 16 September 2005, this film garnered appreciation from critics and the audience due to its resonating theme with the young viewers.

This film focuses on themes of love, family, understanding, and trust, thereby exploring the emotional journey of its characters and the values that bring them together. It sheds light on the wealthy noble family, the Dashwoods, in Barton Cottage in Devonshire. It unfolds the struggle of the Dashwood family–the Dashwood sisters, after the loss of their father, are left destitute, and now, due to financial instability, these sisters are compelled to navigate societal pressures and secure their futures through advantageous marriages.

This film has an ensemble cast, but the leading actors include Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, and Hugh Grant, delivering powerful performances that bring emotional nuance and charm to the story. Sense and Sensibility was released on February 23, 1996, and upon its release, the film gained widespread accolades for its original adaptation.

3. Emma

Emma–Jane Austen’s 1815 book has been adapted and stylised by different directors across the globe. Initially, the director Diarmuid Lawrence, in 1996, crafted a TV film underlying the themes of love and women’s empowerment. The film revolves around Emma, a young, wealthy, and brilliant yet naive woman trying to meddle in others’ lives by donning the hat of matchmaker. Moreover, due to Jane Austen’s books’ popularity paved the way for creating another film in the year 2020.

Autumn de Wilde holds the responsibility of presenting Emma to the audience with a similar plot line, but with grandeur and sophistication. This film explores the nature of Emma, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and her matchmaking skills that lead to a complicated relationship. Meanwhile, navigating her personal love life unveils her true potential and desires for the man she loves. This film garnered appreciation for its costume designs, characteristic performances, and plot. 

4. Persuasion

Anne Elliot’s love is at stake when she decides to give it a second chance after rejecting it previously. Her doubts about the man whom she loves are no longer the same due to the circumstances. Anne has outgrown the inhibitions that had mounted on her earlier. The story begins with Anne breaking off the engagement with Captain Frederick Wentworth due to social indifference. And now, upon a second chance, she has to confront her past to begin a new chapter of her life with Captain Frederick. Director Carrie Cracknell has created an explicit masterpiece of Jane Austen’s book; all the actors’ contributions led to the success of the film. Notably, Dakota Johnson as Anne and Cosmo Jarvis as Captain Frederick Wentworth made a remarkable impression on viewers. Released on July 8, 2022, Persuasion reflects a modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, blending period drama with contemporary storytelling elements.
