The much-awaited animated musical fantasy, K-Pop Demon Hunters, is poised to make its debut on Netflix on June 20, 2025. It boasts a captivating story that intertwines K-pop royalty with the thrill of supernatural action, all brought to life by stunning animation. Here’s a quick take on what viewers, both old and new, can look forward to. The film follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who are part of a world-famous K-pop girl group, as its central plot.

They first capture the hearts of people through stadium concerts, selling out venues and hitting number one on the music charts everywhere. But, unbeknownst to everyone, they also serve as demon hunters in their secret life, safeguarding their most fervent supporters from paranormal dangers that linger in the dark. Things take a turn for the worse when a demon boy band comes onto the scene, and they become the group’s most dangerous foes. Their goal is to become a step above the girls, and in the process, claim the souls of their fans.

The show will feature renowned Asian and Asian American performers voicing the main characters, including:

  • Arden Cho voicing Rumi
  • May Hong voices acting as Mira
  • Ji-young Yoo depicts the character Zoey
  • And for supporting roles, we have Lee Byung-hun, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, Joel Kim, Booster, Yunjin Kim, Liza Koshy, and Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, the First English voice role of his career.
  • Of note, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung of the K-Pop group TWICE make their animated film debut by adding an original song, “Takedown,” for the movie’s soundtrack.

Music: Original Macaulay

I look forward to an energetic soundtrack featuring songs from leading K-Pop writers and producers, including Teddy Park, 24, and Danny Chung from The Black Label. The soundtrack seeks to embody K-pop while propelling the animation’s action and emotional arcs through its music.

Animation Style: Strikingly Bold and Unique

Developed by Sony Pictures Animation (the studio that worked on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), K-Pop Demon Hunters has a visually captivating style of animation that is comparable to the best recent animated blockbusters. Anticipate vivid colour schemes, animated action, dazzling motion sequences, and a stop-motion quality that adds weight and force to character movements.

Themes & Tone

The film is a blend of comedy and action with emotional moments interspersed, tackling friendship, identity, and capricious fame. It is categorised as a ‘musical action adventure’ with elements of casual K-pop, fashion, and food, capturing the global sensation.
