Hollywood filmmakers present classic historical drama movies or series to audiences. One main reason is to look back at the cultural values and cherish those; the second reason is to implement any of those lost traditions in present-day life. There are many historical dramas, but to name a few series, like Bridgerton, Downton Abbey, Belgravia, Sanditon, and Outlander. These dramas portray the lifestyles of royal families alongside those of the servants in their households. In these series, the Royal Families navigate their personal love life and professional lives amid societal pressure. One such series is “ The Gilded Age”

What is Gilded Age Literally?

The name dates back to 1800, when societal changes, corruption, economic disparity, immigration, and political controversies arose. During the Gilded Age, three prominent men—Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Morgan—played major roles in building modern America. To cover the nuances of this era, creator Julian Fellowes crafted a series, “The Gilded Age”.

Old and New Family

The story revolves around Marian Brook, a young woman, arriving in New York in 1882. Upon her arrival, she is entangled between two affluent families–the new and the old–the Russell family and the van Rhijn-Brook family, who are estranged from her. These two families differ in both lifestyle and values.

The Russell family built their wealth by starting a business, while the van Rhijn-Brook family has been well-off for generations. Both families’ homes face each other on 61st Street, close to Fifth Avenue. In parallel, the lives of African Americans, their dreams and challenges and the household staff working for them are also uncovered.

Ensemble cast

This series has an ensemble cast, particularly the leading woman, Marian Brook, played by Louisa Jacobson, Carrie Coon as Bertha Russell, Morgan Spector as George Russell, Denée Benton as Peggy Scott, Taissa Farmiga as Gladys Russell, and Blake Ritson as Oscar van Rhijn. All their performances bring life to characters. Apart from this, since its inception, this series has earned recognition for its best costume, highlighting opulent culture, writing, and direction.
